Picking Skirting & Architraves

A few helpful tips on how to choose the correct skirting & architraves for the house (while adding design interest)

1. Skirting Style

-Modern interiors-

Our two favourite skirting styles that give an impact in a modern interior are actually from Howdens. The Double Groove & Chamfered White are both great choices.

-Traditional interiors-

Victorian White from Howdens or the Georgian from skirting world make excellent choices.

2. Skirting Colour

Avoid white gloss and consider one of the following 3 colour options:

Matching the wall colour so that it blends seamlessly with the walls, minimises skirting impact and looks calming.

Going a shade lighter or darker than the wall paint - this creates a subtle contrast while still minimising skirting impact. For example, Paint & Paper Library Canvas II on walls with either Canvas I or Canvas III on woodwork for contrast.

Contrasting colour. Black is great for interiors with an industrial vibe, or you could consider a fun colour like red, navy or yellow for a more playful interior. Added points if it picks out a tone from a piece of furniture in the room or wallpaper. Railings from Farrow & Ball is a great colour.

3. Skirting Height

We recommend 120mm for modern interiors regardless of the ceiling height. In traditional interiors a minimum skirting height of 200mm would be ideal for standard 2.4m ceilings, but skirting can be as high as 300-400mm for added drama.
